German Sculptures in the Museums of France (Wood and Polychromed Wood, circa 1460-1530)
10 October 2023
18:00 - 20:00

The new publication of the repertory of German sculptures in the museums of France (wood and polychroled wood, circa 1460-1530) lists nearly 500 German sculptures kept in 60 museums in France. After four years of work, it will be published in autumn 2023 on AGORHA, the INHA's database platform.

On this occasion, a roundtable discussion will be held in Paris at the INHA on 10 October 2023.

The working methods will be presented, in particular the material study of the works.
Examination of the wood, knowledge of the carving and polychromy techniques offer major clues for identifying a German sculpture, determining its original function and locating its style. Observations and discoveries, published in the detailed records of the database, could open the way to new research on German sculpture of the late Middle Ages, an artistic field that is still too little known. Several museum curators and sculpture restorers will take part in the discussion. Their various contributions will enrich the debate and the exchanges with the audience.
